Leach History by Pat Smith (nee Firth)
Hi Trevor
I have just been looking around on your web site, which is very impressive. It was the references to Paulina Leach (nee Taylor) which caught my interest. Even though we are not directly descended I do have several bits of information which may interest you about the Taylor family. I will first of all try to outline it the best way I can.
My grandfather David Firth (born 1819) had a brother Samuel Baines Firth (born 1825). Samuel married Elizabeth Taylor in Halifax in 1853 and the next reference to him is in NZ where approx 1858/9 he built the Te Aute Store, who's claim to fame is being the longest running store in a wooden building in NZ. It later became a museum and I now believe its a private house. Many bits were missing from my family tree so all avenues were researched. Samuels wife Elizabeth Taylor was the sister of Abraham Taylor. Abraham Taylor married Paulina Crowther in Halifax 12/2/1847 and had 6 known children.
Eliza Ann Crowther baptised 2/7/1844 at Halifax Parish daughter of Paulina Crowther of Southowram, Spinster
(all Taylors) Elizabeth, Lenna, Susannah, Lucy and Paulina unfortunately I have never found the baptisms for these 5 girls.
Paulina Taylor (nee Crowther) was buried at Lister Lane Cemetery in Halifax 26/9/1865 aged 42 even though there is a headstone, I have never seen it but have a transcription of it.
Both young Paulina and Lucy lived at the store with their aunt & uncle Samuel & Elizabeth Firth
On the census records Abraham Taylors occupation is listed as follows
1851 - Police Constable
1861 - Inn Keeper and Cabinet Maker
1871 - Police Officer
Please get in touch as there are lots of bits of info I can send you
Kind Regards
Pat Smith (nee Firth)
